In a study conducted by
researchers including Ian M Thompson MD at the University of Texas
Health Science Centre, findings suggest that Finasteride may help
reduce the risk of some types of prostate cancer.

table The study took 18,882
healthy men over the age of 55 who had been given digital rectal
examinations and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) tests. The subjects
in the study had normal digital rectal examination results and had
prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels under 3.0 ng/mLs.
The study was conducted over
the duration of seven years and the sample was divided into two
separate groups which were a Finasteride 5mg group and a placebo
group.
Both groups received yearly
examinations and at the end of the seven year study all remaining
participants underwent a prostate biopsy.

The results from the study showed that after seven years 18.4% of
men receiving Finasteride 5mg were diagnosed with prostate cancer
which compared favorably with the 24.4% of men diagnosed with
prostate cancer in the placebo group. The researchers suggested that
the use of Finasteride had produced a 24.8% reduction in
prostate cancer between the two groups during the seven year study.
However, the researchers did
also find that the frequency of more severe types of prostate cancer was
higher in the Finasteride group than in the placebo group.
Prostate cancer effects up
to 650,000 men worldwide and accounts for up to nearly 25% of new
diagnoses of male cancers in the UK. Recently, Max Clifford, the
public relations guru who represents Simon Cowell, appeared on
morning television talking about the disease. Mr. Clifford was
diagnosed after an annual check-up at the doctors and said "I hope
that by speaking out I can encourage other men to have regular
check-ups and perhaps save lives too."
Should you be unlucky enough
to develop prostate cancer, there are a number of treatments
available.
Brachytherapy is a procedure where radioactive isotopes,
commonly referred to as seeds (think rice), are implanted into the
prostate. Once implanted, the 'seeds' irradiate the prostate slowly
over time.
Hormonal treatments
are specifically designed to reduce the effects of testosterone
because it is a major factor in the reproduction and
spread of cancer cells in the prostate. One type of hormonal
treatment is 'anti androgen' therapy. Anti androgens are medicines
that block the testosterone from getting to the cancer cells in
order to stop the cancer from growing. Examples of anti androgen
drugs include Flutamide (Drogenil) and Bicalutamide (Casodex).
