In 1992,
the United States Food and Drug Administration approved 5mg
‘Proscar’ (Finasteride) for the treatment of Benign Prostatic
Hyperplasia otherwise known as BPH. BPH, which is non cancerous, is
the enlargement of the prostate. The prostate is a gland that
surrounds the urethra which transports urine out of the body. As the
prostate enlarges it presses against the urethra and leads to
problems urinating including starting, dribbling and interruptions
during urination.
BPH is a disorder that usually appears in men
after the age of 50 and is believed to be caused by the effect of an
enzyme called ‘5 alpha Reductase’ which metabolises the androgen
testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
DHT not only causes the enlargement of the
prostate but it is also believed to be one of the major causes of
baldness in men. The effect of DHT on the scalp is to slowly shrink
the hair follicle over a period of time (known as miniaturisation of
the follicle). The effect of the continual shrinking is that the
hair shaft continually becomes thinner until the hair follicle
completely disappears and hair production from the follicle is no
longer viable.
In December 1997, the United States Food and Drug
Administration approved 1mg ‘Propecia’ (Finasteride) to
treat
male hair loss and the
effect of Propecia (Finasteride) as a hair loss treatment appears
to be well supported by the many clinical trials that have been
conducted.
finasteride
is widely available to purchase over the Internet and
is sold under many names including Propecia, Proscar,
Finpecia and Fincar. All these products have the same active
ingredient which is Finasteride. If you are more comfortable buying
